Many years ago a friend told me about a young boy living in an orphanage in Uganda who was bright and engaging, but desperately in need of support as the resources around him dwindled. My wife and I decided to support this young boy, Franco Sempagala, by paying for him to attend a school that also provided accommodation and food. So began an enduring friendship. Franco was from the village of Nakikoota.
Franco has had, by Western standards, an astonishing life. There have been twists and turns, opportunities and setbacks that would make for an intriguing movie. Through all of this Franco has persisted, attained a university education and looked after those around him.
The arrangement with Franco is pretty straight forward. We support him and he supports those around him.
At some point the Ugandan government decided to distribute ID cards. The first step was to collect all the names followed by the handing out of ID. The process became a bit muddled and Franco became Kalanzi Johnbosco. Presumably there is now another Franco Sempagala out there somewhere!
Over the years the effect of climate change has become more and more pronounced and subsequently it is becoming harder and harder for the inhabitants of Nakikoota to etch out a living by growing their own food. However they persevere and have been gardening and making bricks to sell. Franco has tried making furniture and pursuing employment opportunities as well.
Directly supporting people like Franco is a very efficient way of helping those who are in need and are motivated to help themselves.
If you would like to help Franco then please contact me through the contacts page. 100% of any funds donated will go to Franco, I will gladly cover the transaction costs.
